We watched a video of ‘The Journey’ – a picture book by Francesca Sanna and then listened to Michael Rosen’s poem, ‘On the move again’. We talked about what it meant to seek refuge and how we might feel if we were forced from our home country.
After impressively animated discussions about meaning and the effectiveness of various poetic devices and structures, the children worked alone or in groups to write a poem about ‘Home’.
Year 6 enjoyed some Polish activities on European Day of Languages.
We began our day with a variety of new teachers who taught us aspects of Brazilian Portuguese, Arabic, Guajarati, Arabic, Italian, Yoruba and Welsh.
We enjoyed tasting a variety of traditional Polish foods – it will certainly provide us with content for our next Penpal letters! We finished our day learning the Polish words for some colours and numbers before decorating Polish flags and completing word searches.
Year 4 tested the melting point of chocolate by using a variety of different techniques to melt the chocolate for Willy Wonka’s chocolate river.
Year 3 have been learning how fossils formed millions of years ago and that they are only found in sedimentary rocks. The children made their own fossil in salt dough using a range of 'dinosaur skeletons' and shells. We learnt that 99% of fossils are of creatures that lived in a marine environment.
On Thursday 28th September we welcomed Boogie Bounce to school. The children took part in fun packed and music filled trampoline workshops. They had a really enjoyable time! Many of the children asked if Boogie Bounce are coming back!
Year 4 have been studying the architecture of Gaudi. We really admired his mosaic work so decided to create our own paper version of his trencadis animals. They look great, don't they?
Year 4 celebrated European Languages Day by learning about Germany and some German phrases.
As it was a classmate's birthday, we learnt how to sing Happy Birthday in German. We learnt about colours and created the national flag. We used a song to help us to count to ten in German. Most of the class learnt to greet each other in German and name members of the family. We had a little picnic of traditional German food – I’m not sure that everyone enjoyed the sauerkraut though!

Year 4 have been learning about Roman Numerals. The children used toothpicks to form Roman Numerals and create calculations
Year 3 have been using their knowledge of Picasso style cubist portraits and painted their own using bold colours and an abstract design.
Year 3 have been busy petrologists (rock scientist) this half term. First, we investigated the properties of a selection of rocks by testing their hardness, appearance, density and finally if they reacted to a drop of weak acid (vinegar).
We then learnt about three different rock types and how they form. We used layers of bread to make a sedimentary rock complete with a fossilized sea creature. The class looked at how igneous rock can cool quickly and form obsidian or slowly to form pumice (the only rock that floats).
We also used play-doh to experiment how heat and pressure can change sedimentary and igneous rocks into a new type of rock called metamorphic.
Year 4 learnt a song and added their own verse to explain how they travel.
